Developing and Living Corporate Values
Strassen- und Schifffahrtsamt SVSA Bern

Lived values are the core of a strong corporate culture. So how do you get 360 employees to identify with these values and actively shape them? This was the challenge that the Strassenverkehrs- und Schifffahrtsamt Bern (SVSA) posed to standing ovation.
From Employee Insights to a New Value System
The path to a new set of corporate values began with a simple but powerful question: If SVSA were a person, how would you describe them? To find the answers, we immersed ourselves in the lives of SVSA’s employees. Ten in-depth interviews provided personal stories and candid insights, giving us a clear picture of how the corporate culture was perceived internally.
«From insight to impact – we used a comprehensive online survey to assess the current and ideal state of SVSA’s values.»
A Company-Wide Effort
Employees across every department and level contributed 564 statements that became the backbone of this process. At the same time, we launched a thorough online survey to evaluate where SVSA’s values currently stood and where the team wanted them to be. Together, these insights and survey results provided a clear picture of the values already in place and those employees aspired to develop.
Armed with this information, we joined SVSA leadership for a co-creation workshop. Together, we examined the collected data and laid the groundwork for a new set of values. Every story, opinion, and insight helped shape an authentic and cohesive value system that strengthens the company’s culture.
A Creative Approach to Communicating Values
Values aren’t just words on paper – they need to be experienced. At SVSA’s summer event, we introduced the 360 employees to their new values. As part of an interactive city-wide rally, teams were challenged to capture a photo that represented each value.
This creative activity sparked engaging conversations about what these values meant to each individual. The photos were displayed at value stations, creating a dynamic gallery that highlighted the personal interpretations of each employee. This initiative strengthened internal communications and deepened SVSA’s sense of community.
A Journey Best Taken Together
The journey to living these values is under way, and this is the beginning of a new chapter for SVSA. Together, we've created values that not only guide the team internally, but also represent SVSA's employer brand externally. A path that the Strassen- und Schifffahrtsamt Bern is determined to continue to follow.
